Got A Clog That You Can't Get Out Of Your Kitchen Sink? 2 Things You Can Try

Posted on

A clog in a sink can be due to many things, such as food and grease getting trapped. In some cases, they are easy to clear up using products you can purchase at a store. If you have tried these products and your sink is still clogged up, there are other things you can try, two of which are listed below.

Use Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar is an acetic acid, and when this acid is mixed with baking soda, there is a chemical reaction that produces water and carbon dioxide. This reaction can eat through a clog to clear your sink.

Before you do anything, boil a pot of water and pour the boiling water down the drain. This is to help loosen the clog. Pour about a cup of baking soda into the sink drain, and then pour a cup of vinegar in the drain. It will immediately start to fizz, which means it is working. To keep the vinegar and baking soda from fizzing out, put a stopper over the drain.

Let it sit for about 15 minutes or until you stop hearing the fizzing sound. Remove the stopper and run the water for a few minutes to ensure the clog is gone. If it is not, there is another method you can try.

Use Caustic Soda

Caustic soda is also known as sodium hydroxide. It is dangerous to use as it can cause some very bad chemical burns if you are not careful. For this reason, use some thick rubber gloves when working with it. Because it is so strong, you should wear a mask over your face and could even wear some goggles to protect your eyes. You can purchase caustic soda at a hardware store.

Put about a gallon of cold water into a bucket and then add 4 cups of caustic soda to the water. Use a wooden spoon to stir.  You will see the water start to fizz, which means it is heating up. When this happens, pour the mixture down the drain. Wait about 30 minutes and then pour a pot of boiling water into the drain. Turn on the water to see if the clog is cleared out. If not, you can repeat this one more time to see if it will work.

If your kitchen sink is still clogged, the clog is likely deeper into your pipes. In a case like this, you will need the services of a plumber to clear the clog for you.
