There are certain precautions that you should take when it comes to preventing your pipes from freezing. Being proactive to make sure that your pipes are not freezing will prevent any damage from occurring. So what are some of the ways that you can prevent your pipes from freezing and causing damage to your home?

  1. Keep Your Home Warm. Keeping your home warm will ensure that your pipes do not freeze. If you are home, you will want to set the thermostat at a comfortable temperature anyways. But what if you are traveling for a few weeks and don't want to waste energy? You will not want to set the thermostat under 55 degrees Fahrenheit as you will run the risk of the pipes freezing. You may also want to open closets, cupboards and other areas where there are pipes to allow the air to heat them up and keep them from freezing.
  2. Drain The Water. Another way to help prevent pipes from freezing is to drain the water from the pipes. If you know you are going to be away for an extended period of time or if there is going to be extremely cold weather coming through during the night, you may want to drain the pipes. This is done by turning off the main water valve so that not water is entering the home. You can then open several drains in the home and let all the water run out until it is gone. If there is no water in the pipes, they can't freeze.
  3. Insulation. Insulating your pipes is a great way to keep them from freezing. Pipes in crawl spaces, attics and other areas that are more susceptible to extreme cold are especially important insulate. Not only will insulating your pipes prevent freezing but it will also help to conserve energy and save money.
